Tripod Rock is a glacial erratic. These rocks were brought here and came to rest after the glacial retreat. As they retreated what we now know as the #pequannock valley was glacial lake #passaic which slowly drained. To this day it continues to drain actually from its remnants in the #greatswamp and even the #meadowlands – This rock is approximately 841’ over sea level and it is impossible to fathom the glaciers advancing this far south and to this height in #nj #newjersey #pyramidmountain #njhiking #hiking the importance of the glaciers to the topography of the state is typically unheralded. The glacial melt discharge left behind the flatter, sandier land of #southjersey giving birth to the #pinebarrens #boonton #montville #morriscounty #northjersey — view on Instagram http://bit.ly/2VL8UY7
