Clay Street Bridge and the Passaic River Waterfront of East Newark, NJ

Clark Thread Company Historic District

The Clay Street Bridge is a swing bridge on the Passaic River between Newark and East Newark, NJ. Originally opened in 1903, the Warren through truss rim-bearing bridge was substantially rehabilitated in the 1970s, It is listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. As of  2015, it was determined that a replacement is the preferred option going forward.

The bridge has not been in use since 1977. It has been abandoned in its upright position. The tracks on the Newark side of the river are still an active freight line. The bridge is also known as the "Annie Bridge" since portions of the movie Annie were filmed near the bridge in 1982.

Red Bull Arena, Saturday, October 7th, 2017. On that evening, the Red Bulls defeated the Vancouver White Caps 3-0 to advance to the MLS playoffs.Red Bull Arena itself is a soccer stadium in Harrison, New Jersey currently the home of the New York Red Bulls of MLS. It seats 25,000 people in the Riverbend District of Harrison alongside the Passaic River across from Newark, NJ.

Came across the sign being discarded actually within the confines of Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ which had recently been removed and being replaced with a newer sign. Most road signs aren't of much interest of course, but this one has too many roads mentioned on it along with Newark and New York City mentioned, not to include it in this blog. I mean, after all, I had a bad dream where I was snarled in traffic, and it definitely looked something like this.

Weehawken dueling grounds in NJ made famous by the Hamilton/Burr duel, but there were other dignatories who dueled here including Dewitt Clinton, a former governor of New York, and Oliver Perry. The reason the duels happened in Weehawken is because it wasn’t in New York. Dueling wasn’t legal in New York and the participants were seeking to avoid criminal charges in NY. What’s interesting is that dueling wasn’t legal in New Jersey either, but apparently the State of New Jersey took a laissez-faire approach to dueling. Can you imagine NJ being such a lawless place that people, seeking to evade the laws of NY, would row across the Hudson River thinking they could participate in a duel in NJ with impunity?

In the pictures above the picture of the boulder with pennies on it is apparently the boulder thought to be the boulder where Alexander Hamilton rested his head after being mortally wounded. Hamilton did not die in NJ, but rather died a relatively painful and protracted death in NYC.

Bayonne Bridge, Bayonne, NJ. The bridge spans the Kill Van Kull which connects Newark Bay with Upper New York Bay. Construction on the bridge started in 1928 and the bridge opened to vehicle traffic in November, 1931. It has been connecting Bayonne, NJ and Staten Island, NY since.
