Iditarod #jersey style but no dogs. Talking about uphill both ways in the snow, this Klondike Derby sled was built by 7th-8th grade #boyscouts from Troop 242 sponsored by American Legion Post 242. Pulled by six-eight scouts over at Camp #Allamuchy which then was the Morris Sussex Council #BSA. The scouts would pull the sled to the campsite approximately two miles over hill over dale. Recently pulled out of the #joneshardware attic barn before demolition in #pomptonplains #pequannock #newjersey the sled now resides at the Pequannock #history #museum at the 1872 #railroad station. Tripod Rock is a glacial erratic. These rocks were brought here and came to rest after the glacial retreat. As they retreated what we now know as the #pequannock valley was glacial lake #passaic which slowly drained. To this day it continues to drain actually from its remnants in the #greatswamp and even the #meadowlands – This rock is approximately 841’ over sea level and it is impossible to fathom the glaciers advancing this far south and to this height in #nj #newjersey #pyramidmountain #njhiking #hiking the importance of the glaciers to the topography of the state is typically unheralded. The rolling hills of #northjersey #njhighlands as #i287 curves to the east of federal hill in #bloomingdale #nj the site of the #pompton mutiny during the #americanrevolution – more notorious history is associated from a 1930s German bund that had an encampment on the hill where pro-Nazi memorabilia was found. Memorial park in #wharton #nj #newjersey this #ww2 memorial is on the other side of the park from the ww1 memorial. I particularly liked the backdrop of the relatively large grand home behind the park. The park has a 37mm antitank gun which are very common surplus weapons seen in many towns. One reason is because the 37mm really was not effective against German armor in WW2. While it has a #dover mailing address, St. Mary’s Church is actually situated in #wharton #nj this gothic church was designed in 1873 by noted architect Jeremiah O'Rourke built of locally mined rough-cut stone. The building features an open timber roof and jewel-toned stained glass. Historically, #nj industrial development was rooted in iron. The iron industry declined in the latter half of the 19th century. Still the rivers were able to power mills and diversification brought a major influx of silk mills to the area. Today many area town museums are open to the public, all on the same day. Visiting the #pequannock township museum in #pomptonplains #nj #newjersey I noted the Beames Dairy sign. Interestingly one can note the ‘Grade A’ scratched out of the sign. Done because he no longer sold Grade A milk.
